Milica Ivanovic: More Than a Basketball Player

February 14, 2011

By: Jarrett Murphy

There are many student athletes walking around the campus of Catawba who have interesting stories and backgrounds,  and who have gone through great obstacles to get to where they are today. However, I found one student athlete in particular who is amazing on and off the basketball court. Her name is Milica Ivanovic.

Milica is a senior at Catawba who is majoring in business management and is a guard on the Women’s basketball team. While interviewing Milica she expressed her passion for basketball and showed me how much she really cared about the game.  With this passion for basketball and seeing her play, I could tell that she was a leader on the court. Milica uses her leadership skills off the court as well and says that is the reason she seeks a job in management once she graduates. This way she can continue to lead.

While talking to Milica, I learned a lot about her home country, Serbia. She says Serbia has a lot of hangout spots, but one in particular that she talked about was the lake. Milica says at the lake you can do almost anything. Cafes, basketball courts, and clubs surround the lake. Her enthusiasm about her home country made me want to take a trip to Serbia.

Milica informed me that Serbia is more than just a hangout spot, it’s a country driven on basketball. That made her decision to play easy and led her to play here at Catawba. When she made the decision to play basketball for Catawba,  her parents were supportive of her decision and that made the transition easy. She has dreams of turning pro once she is done with her education.

Milica is more than just a basketball player...she is an excellent student, a person that likes to work hard at everything she does, and one of the nicest and most unique individuals that you will ever meet.
